Zamperini Field

Zamperini Field, Torrance’s municipal airport, was mostly overlooked by the region’s military aerospace boom. Though it has a few independent aircraft component manufacturing companies on its eastern side, including Stellant Systems, which makes microwave devices for radar systems, the largest aviation tenant at the airport is the Robinson Helicopter Company, which has made thousands of its innovative small helicopters here since the 1970s (and is a favored platform for independent aerial photographers). Also at the field is the Western Museum of Flight, one of the few public museums dedicated to the region’s aerospace history. The museum was moved from its former location, next to the Northrop plant at Hawthorne Airport, and much of its collection comes from Northrop’s legacy.
