Ford’s Aeronutronic Division operated a 200-acre engineering and research center in Newport Beach from 1957 to 1993, used for research, engineering, and manufacturing rocket engines, missile guidance systems, and computer hardware. The site was the first industrial lease at Irvine Ranch, and featured an elegant modernist campus with a dozen major buildings, designed by William Pereira, who later designed the nearby campus at UC Irvine. Ford sold the business in 1990 and all the buildings were demolished by 1996. The property was redeveloped into an upscale gated community called One Ford Road. Environmental monitoring of groundwater contamination plumes at and around the site are ongoing.
