At the gated southern entrance to Plant 42 is the FAA’s Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center, which monitors and controls air traffic throughout Southern California, and lines up the traffic headed to and from airports in the Los Angeles region, consolidating information from radar and other tracking sources. Across the street are displays of historic aircraft, and a small museum and gift shop, the only places offering public access to Plant 42. Some of the aircraft on display were built by Lockheed at Plant 42, including an SR-71, the fastest and highest flying production aircraft ever made, capable of flying at more than 2,200 miles per hour. When one was flown from here to be delivered to the Smithsonian in 1990, it went across the country in 67 minutes.
